Breast milk is the most suitable food for Premature Newborns (PN) and for infants in general. In this sense, the use of milking can be considered as a tool in promoting breastfeeding in the care of hospitalized preterm infants without compromising the survival of this clientele, while not yet have clinical conditions to perform suckling at the mother's womb. The object of this study was the meaning of manual pumping breast milk in preterm infants from the mother's perspective in a Neonatal Unit. Objective: To analyze comprehensively the meaning of manual milking for mothers of preterm infants in the neonatal unit. It is a phenomenological study supported in sociological phenomenology of Alfred Schutz. The collection of speeches was given through the interview, using the following guiding questions: for you, what does the breast milk of milking? What you have in mind (the expectation) with milking breast milk for your child on a daily basis? How has it been for you to perform the manual milking? The study included 19 mothers aged 16-33 years, with premature babies in the Neonatal Unit of a public hospital in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. These preterm infants were with gestational age (GA) of 24-35 weeks in the period of data collection. From the analysis of the speeches emerged three categories of concretely experienced, namely: difficulties in milking the perspective of Milk Production, Milk provides the best for the baby and Milk brings personal satisfaction. Mothers understand that the best breastfeeding method for your child's chest and hand milking might be the way to achieve this. Consider that breast milk provides the best for your child and highlight the importance of breastfeeding for preterm infants and its possibility of high fastest neonatal unit. The personal satisfaction of mothers with the milking procedure came when they realized that the more the PN will improve their clinical condition, the more it feels satisfied and encouraged to milk. In this context, it highlights the importance of the need for health professional that deals with these mothers hold a sensitive listening to capture their real needs in the daily activities of the Neonatal Unit, its intentional design to milk human milk, the prospect of better targeting of the guidelines to be carried out. This study allows us to offer data for the preparation of an appropriate work plan to the real needs of mothers, in order to continue breastfeeding after discharge.
