Dois gêneros, duas histórias? A institucionalização da ciência política no Brasil

The objective of this thesis is to analyze gender inequalities in the institutionalization of political science in Brazil. This study explores the hypothesis that women have less prestige among people who consolidated the discipline because they are affected by the gender division of labor, which concentrates them in less esteemed activities and topics in the means of scientific evaluation. The main question of this research is: how did men and women participate in the formation of political science in the country? The text is divided into four chapters, each addressing one of the following secondary questions: How did the discussion about gender asymmetries in the discipline arise? How has gender diversity in the field varied over time? Who are the intellectual pioneers of Brazilian political science? What are the differences in work practices and the accumulation of prestige vis-à-vis the gender of the founders and founders of the discipline? To answer such questions, the investigation uses mixed methods with primary and secondary data sources, among which are semi-structured interviews, systematic review of the specialized bibliography, analysis of official documents, analysis of trajectories, descriptive statistics, field research materials and bibliometric techniques. In addition, whenever possible I use comparisons with other countries to position the Brazilian reality in relation to the international scenario. The main results of the work show that gender diversity varies according to degree level and professional role, thematic area of concentration of graduate programs, universities and work practices. In Brazil, in contrast to countries like the United States - the birthplace of political science education as a professional field - and neighboring Argentina, women quickly gained positions of power in the discipline. The national group of founding women even has as many citations and legacies of internationalization and student supervision as that of the founding men. On the other hand, when we observe the entire scientific community, it is possible to conclude that women are a minority in the most prestigious activities, such as teaching and authoring publications, which cannot be explained by variations in the topics studied. The reduction of female presence as careers progress is one of the central problems of gender inequalities in the history of political science.
