This work adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to analyse the narrative of S. Bernardo, by Graciliano Ramos, in light of the concepts of the analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. Using a psychology viewpoint, it attempts to broaden the range of interpretation possibilities of the author, without, however, leaving out the extensive existing critics from many knowledge areas. The main thread of this work is the representations of the masculine archetype in the narrative, in its characters and in the patriarchal culture of the Brazilian Northeast s countryside in the 1930 s. The analysis also reflects on the interactions between this masculine image with the feminine, with emphasis on the relationship between the main character, Paulo Honório, and his wife, Madalena. As a reflection element, the failure and non-viability of this masculine modus operandi which opposes all that concerns the feminine, silencing and subduing it is noticed. Such modus operandi also reveals itself destructive to men, inhibiting the expression of individuality and singularity, while preventing any perception of totality and completeness.
