The present dissertation aims at thinking through Virginia Woolf s life and literary work apart from conceptions that place her as a depressive and suicidal woman. Taking into account that the author s empirical self may not be achieved and defined except by the tools of fiction and imagination -, Woolf s mental illness is going to be used as a metaphor, not for an ill body, but for an ill and limping feminine writing which is oppressed by a male tradition. Taking into account that women still fight for fields of assertion and inscription, it is intended to rethink this logic of a repressive thought in order to propose a new aesthetics of thought through the concept of intoxication; as an ill body that can intoxicate the current modes of thinking and become something else. Thus, tradition, writing and intoxication are going to be treated as ghosts that have a double potentiality haunting and being haunted and are beyond an oppressive logic of a male primacy, for the feminine writing arises as a sensuous experience capable of reorganizing and restructuring thought. This work, therefore, is divided into two parts which call into question these ghosts. To start with, it is going to be discussed the impossibility of accessing Woolf s biographical self, based on her essay The Art of Biography (1939). Then, Woolf s illness is going to be used in a metaphorical way in order to think through an ill feminine writing. However, regarding the essay On Being Ill (1930), her disease will be conceived in an affirmative and potent way. So, the concept of intoxication considering Derrida s (2005) understandings on the undecidable aspect of phármakon, both remedy and poison of speech, are going to be brought to reflect upon écriture feminine (CIXOUS, 1975) as an intoxicating and transforming potentiality of the logic of thought
