The issue of this research concerns homosexuality and the ethics regarding the psychoanalytic practice. It comprehends the social representations of homosexuality throughout history, pointing out the social and cultural moments that have changed the subject s relationship with desire. By creating psychoanalysis, Freud subverted the notion of sexuality, expanding it beyond the biological genital concepts of the erogenous zones. From then onwards, the choice of one s love partner followed the principle of incompleteness, thus emphasizing the notion of the non-existence of sexual relation. However, this does not mean that the subject should give up the object that causes his/her desire. The hypothesis that supports this thesis has to do with the idea that gender choice is not necessarily related with the choice of the partner, confirming the bonding between the real, the symbolic and the imaginary implicated in the unconscious complex of castration, as elaborated by Lacan. If the election of a partner involves some sort of unconscious choice, gender selection has necessarily to do with some unconscious choice as well. With its ethics, psychoanalysis supports that desire is the only possible means through which the subject may fight against the discontents of sexuality
