A linguagem do samba : o léxico e a gíria do Fundo de Quintal

This dissertation focuses on the specialized lexicon of samba, mainly the lexical and/or semantic fields used by composers for song writing, phraseology and particularly, slangs. These linguistic resources are typically found in the lyrics of the first composed sambas, and are still used nowadays. Therefore, we present a brief history of the genre, and we also discuss the concepts of linguistic varieties, taking into account the one that originates for social reasons and reflects on the most recent theories about song. As an intersemiotic genre, a song blends verbal and musical languages, and we here focus on the textual face of it, the lyrics, through its linguistic-discoursive analysis. The slang deserves special attention as a distinguishing linguistic resource of this typically Carioca musical genre. The use of this language reinforces the informal oral discourse, which is a trademark of the lyrics of samba, with especial attention to Partido Alto . Our careful corpus analysis resulted in an annotated glossary of the collected lexical items. We particularly noticed the perpetuity of slang, its characteristics, its constitution and its expressiveness, in the sambas analyzed lyrics. Our object of study was Fundo de Quintal band lyrics, ranging from 1980 and 1999, and the expressive strength of the chosen vocabulary to describe in detail the inhabitants and situations presented in the lyrics. It should be pointed out that Fundo de Quintal band, which repertoire has been chosen as the corpus of this study, is the most extensive and most important of those who are samba militant, and its songs are currently an important source for many artists of this genre
