The aim of this research is to think about elements for an ontology of social being and for a philosophical anthropology based on the ontology of imagination and of the imaginary theory of Cornelius Castoriadis. In a subsequent moment, a cross-reading exercise was carried out: a sociological reading of Castoriadis and a Castoriadian interpretation of some theoretical and metatheoretical postulates of sociology. In the meantime, an examination was made on the relations between sociology and imagination working with the hypothesis that this can be a useful key to (re)reading the sociological tradition and social thought. The hypothesis proposed here is that imagination as a philosophical category and as a sociological notion had in sociology a fate similar to that of the inherited tradition (the tradition of Western thought), that is, it underwent successive processes of concealment. What, on the other hand, contrasts with the potential proficuity of the concept in diverse fields of reflection, including, it is believed, for social and sociological theories.
