The present thesis aims at the preservation and the patrimonialization strategy developed by the City Hall towards the implementation of Porto Maravilha‟ Project. Our goal was to identify the categories and the metaphors utilized in the project and the meaning of its strategies. In order to achieve such goal, we investigated the actions and the local cultural interventions, taking into consideration that patrimony is a category of thought operated in discourses that propose certain notions of memory and urban history. By using the analysis of the strategies and discourses presented in such initiatives, we tried to grasp the meanings and functions played by the concepts of culture and urban memory in order to understand in which way cultural values and goods are used towards the guidance for the revitalization in the city‟s Waterfront, as well as for the renewing of Rio de Janeiro‟s image. Such context raises issues and challenges towards the comprehension of the new meanings imputed in words such as urban patrimony‟, historical center‟, collections‟, monument‟, identity‟, among others. Therefore, the main objectives of this thesis are: to identify the permanence and the transformations in the patrimony preservation practice in the Porto Maravilha‟ project; to unveil the purposes that guided and promoted such transformations; and, at last, to explain the notion of patrimony and the kind of preservation practiced in the context in focus.
