The main goal of this study is to interpret the importance of Education in the discourse and practice of Henrique Maximiano Coelho Netto, through the multiple spaces carried by this master - politics, the press and schools. The discourse promoted at the inauguration of an acting school has awakened in me a new look about his performance in the teaching field, where he defended that "it is in the school that the people become a nation". Within a turbulent political and social disputes of that time, Coelho Netto has taught at the Ginásio de Campinas (1901- 1904), Ginásio Nacional (Colégio Pedro II) (1907 - 1909) and at Escola Dramática (Escola de Teatro Martins Pena) (1911 1934), of which he was later director. Besides that, he was also the Secretary of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro (1890 - 1891), Federal Deputy of Maranhão (1909-1917), General Secretary of Liga da Defesa Nacional (1919) and president of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (1926) - an institution of which he participated in the foundation in 1897. After his death in 1934, he has left extensive literary production, among them books, articles in periodicals, plays, speeches (some in books), conferences, chronicles, stories for children, letters, reports, etc. I focused on such sources that were located in the collections of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (FBN/ RJ), Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL), Arquivo Nacional, Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa and from the Núcleo de Documentação e Memória do Colégio Pedro II (NUDOM), and this has allowed me to find the author s contributions to Education through lettering and images. For that reason, I had to dialogue with studies about the politics of that time, the history of the country, specially from the Rio de Janeiro city in the First Republic, the national identity issues- based on Nagle (1974) and José Murilo de Carvalho (1990); about chronicles, journals, books, and publishers of Brazil - also based on Chalhoub, Neves and Pereira (2005), Mignot (2010) and Hallewell (2005); as well as about the schools and the written culture - because the sources used were letters, college records, books and biographies. When turning to the presence of Coelho Netto in the Educational scene, this research in a certain way, intends to contribute to the forgetfulness to which he was relegated in the historiography of the Brazilian Education which has not yet explored the importance of Education in the writer's discourse unlike other areas of knowledge like Scenic Arts, Social History and Letters
