Sand extraction is one of the most environmentally impacting and unsustainable mining activities, degrading, polluting and silting rivers and lakes and eroding the soil by digging. In this sector there is little reliable information on water consumed and sand produced, hampering the efficient management by parts of the basin committees and effective oversight by the responsible bodies. The general objective is to evaluate the processes and values of financial collection with the charging for the use of water resources in the sand extraction sector and with the Financial Compensation for the Exploration of Mineral Resources (CFEM) in the Hydrographic Region II of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The specific objectives are: (i) to survey the quantities of sand produced in the global, national mining sector and in the Guandu Committee area; (ii) raising the amounts collected with the charge for the use of water resources in the sand extraction sector in the Guandu Committee area; (iii) raising the amounts collected by charging CFEM in the sand extraction sector in the Guandu Committee area; and (iv) calculate the amount of sand produced and water consumed by the sand extraction sector in the Guandu / RJ Committee hydrographic basin. It is expected to present as a contribution to the management system, a quantitative data analysis model, as a way to establish a routine of analysis of information from the sand extraction sector, in the management of water resources, in the watershed scale, in order to contribute to the improvement of the collection system, better control of supervision and greater interaction, exchange of information between the agencies involved.
