The field of Post-colonial studies was consolidated from the 1980s on as one of the main sources of theoretical and epistemological challenges to social sciences. Probably because of its disciplinary and geographic origins, or even because of its own content, the assimilation of post-colonial ideas and concepts by the brazilian academic community has been marked by criticism and complex mediations yet to be studied. The first goal of this research was to comprehend the meanings involved in the emergence, consolidation and evocation of the post-colonial as an intelectual reference. The second main goal was to erify, through a systematic analysis, how the post-colonial references appear in the work of brazilian social scientists. Five A1 scientific journals were selected as sources, and each published article between 1997 and 2017 was scanned in search of any reference to post- colonial authors or concepts. From those articles, 60 were selected for a closer analysis. Even though the uses of post-colonial studies were diverse, there were some fairly clear patterns, specially in regard to the research themes adressed. It was possible to identify a concentration of post-colonial references in the fields of theory-oriented research, discussions about race and identity and also in the anthropology of state.
