Resumo: The proposal of this research is to investigate the photographic documentation left by Georges Leuzinger and its contribution to the construction of diversity of memory and image of Rio de Janeiro, in the nineteenth century, in history classes with groups of basic education (eighth grade). It was assumed that the photographic collection elaborated by Leuzinger, today patrimonial collection of guard national institutions, can motivate educators to search these new references of visual resources, with a careful look and interpretation of them. This pioneering and systematic work of Leuzinger commercialized in his studio from 1865 to 1876 about the city of Rio de Janeiro was the starting point to the questions about the teaching of History. As product of the Professional Master, a book was written as supporting teaching material for the subject, directed to teachers as a support for the elaboration of different pedagogical proposals with these photographic sources. As for theoretical framework, Maurice Halbwachs, Jacques Le Goff, Michael Pollak, Boris Kossoy e Ana Maria Mauad are the basis for appropriation of concepts of photography, memory and document.

Partiu-se do pressuposto que o acervo fotográfico por ele elaborado, hoje acervo/patrimônio de instituições nacionais de guarda, pode motivar educadores a buscar essas novas referências de fontes visuais, com zelo no olhar e interpretação das mesmas. O questionamento que se provoca nesta pesquisa fundamenta-se na obra fotográfica pioneira e sistemática, sobre a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, realizada e comercializada por Leuzinger através de seu ateliê, no período que compreendeu os anos de 1865 a 1876.
