Virtue as excellence in the Greek polis would constitute the foundation of education according to the pedagogical assumptions developed by Socrates. Thus, poetry, due to its inventive and fanciful characteristic, would not serve to educate citizens because it corrupts the soul, especially the young ones. And if the individual's action would correspond to his performance in the whole of the polis, the corruption of his soul would be extremely harmful to the city. However, despite attacks on Greek poetic culture, Socrates used literary, poetic elements in his way of conducting his virtuous pedagogy. How did Socrates use this? It is assumed that there is poetry useful to the city's designs, as well as a form of discourse that can penetrate the interstices of rhetoric and unmask it from its core.
