Resumo: Concentrating on the preamble of the argument about the "lovers of spectacles" (Republic V 475e-477a), against the usual approach, I aim not at "saving" the proposal put forward by Plato but at exploring some inconsistencies that affect it. Highlighting the argumentative knot the philosopher feels compelled to return to in a number of dialogues I suggest he was trying to fix a fallacy committed in this argument when he granted continued attention to two major epistemological problems. One is the resort to 'participation"™ in Forms in order to explain the nature of a multitude of individuals to whom a common name is assigned (Republic X 596a). The other, dominant in the central books of the Republic and present in many other dialogues, is how "epistêmê" and "doxa" may be related.

The other, dominant in the central books of the Republic and present in many other dialogues, is how "epistêmê" and "doxa" may be related.Contra a abordagem habitual, o objetivo deste texto, focado no preâmbulo do argumento sobre os "amadores de espetáculos" (República 475e4-477a4), não é tentar "salvar" a proposta avançada por Platão, mas, pelo contrário, revelar algumas inconsistências que a viciam, apontando o nó argumentativo a que o filósofo se obriga a retornar numa porção de diálogos. Pretende-se desse modo mostrar que a atenção por ele concedida a dois importantes problemas epistemológicos pode ter sido motivada pela intenção de corrigir uma falácia cometida no passo em análise. O primeiro desses é o do recurso à "˜participação"™ nas Formas para explicar a natureza de uma multiplicidade de indiví­duos aos quais é atribuí­do um mesmo nome (República X 596a).
