Resumo: The water courses are social environments, because through them great civilizations have begun. However, man's relationship with this environment has been modified over time, and the place that previously had for many a symbolic value and belonging as a space of contemplation, leisure and source of resources, has become in many places, of different contexts and experiences, a space of environmental degradation. Thus, considering the memory and the experience of people with water courses, this article aims to present, in a way analogous to the geographical concept of 'place', the environmental perception of residents of the municipality of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe - PE on the Capibaribe river. To do so, qualitative exploratory research is developed through a bibliographical and documentary review of the subject and object of study, as well as field research based on the observation of the place and the application of the interview to thirty (30) residents of the mentioned municipality. Finally, from the results obtained, a reflection on the possibility of changing the paradigm and behavior of the population towards this fluvial environment is presented, as well as, it indicates the environmental education as a tool that promotes this social transformation.

Sin embargo, la relación del hombre con este ambiente fue modificada a lo largo del tiempo y, el lugar que antes poseí­a para muchos un valor simbólico y de pertenencia como espacio de contemplación, ocio y fuente de recursos, se tornó en muchos lugares, de diferentes contextos y vivencias, espacio de degradación ambiental. Así­, considerando la memoria y la vivencia de las personas con los cursos de agua, este artí­culo tiene como objetivo, presentar de forma análoga al concepto geográfico de 'lugar', la percepción ambiental de moradores del municipio de Santa Cruz del Capibaribe - PE sobre el rí­o Capibaribe. Para ello, la investigación de carácter exploratorio cualitativo, se desarrolla a través de revisión bibliográfica y documental sobre el tema y el objeto de estudio, así­ como por investigación de campo basada en la observación del lugar y en la aplicación de entrevista a 30 (treinta) los habitantes del citado municipio. Por último, a partir de los resultados obtenidos, se presenta una reflexión sobre la posibilidad de cambio de paradigma y de comportamiento de la población hacia este ambiente fluvial así­ como, indica la educación ambiental como instrumento promotor de esta transformación social.Os cursos d"™água são ambientes sociais, pois através deles grandes civilizações se iniciaram. Entretanto, a relação do homem com este ambiente foi sendo modificada ao longo do tempo e, o lugar que antes possuí­a para muitos um valor simbólico e de pertencimento como espaço de contemplação, lazer e fonte de recursos, tornou-se em muitos locais, diante de diferentes contextos e vivências, espaço de degradação ambiental. Assim, considerando a memória e a vivência das pessoas com os cursos d"™água, este artigo tem como objetivo, apresentar de forma análoga ao conceito geográfico de "˜lugar"™, a percepção ambiental de moradores do municí­pio de Santa Cruz do Capibaribe - PE sobre o rio Capibaribe. Para tal, a pesquisa de caráter exploratório qualitativo, desenvolve-se através de revisão bibliográfica e documental sobre o tema e o objeto de estudo, como também, por pesquisa de campo baseada na observação do lugar e na aplicação de entrevista a 30 (trinta) moradores do citado municí­pio.
