Resumo: The first step in a variationist analysis is to circumscribe the linguistic variable that will be the subject of study. Based in a sociofunctionalist perspective, we aim at: (i) show how the convergence of the concept of linguistic variable with that of functional macrodomain can be employed as a strategy for circumscribing the variable; (ii) apply this strategy to two functional domains, adversity and concessiviness. The coding variants of these domains are multifunctional: the adversity conjunctions mas and só que, and the concessive conjunctions mesmo (que), apesar (de) que and nem que. We concluded the paper by ponting out advantages of adopting the strategy of delimitation of a macrodomain as a linguistic variable.

Bajo una perspectiva socio funcionalista, nuestros objetivos son: (i) mostrar cómo la convergencia del concepto de variable lingüística con el de (macro) dominio funcional puede utilizarse como una estrategia para la circunscripción de la variable; (ii) aplicar esa estrategia a dos dominios funcionales, la adversidad y la concesividad. Las variantes de codificación de esos dominios son formas multifuncionales: mas y só que, respecto a la adversidad, y mesmo (que), a pesar (de) que y nem que, respecto a la concesividad. Finalizamos el texto señalando ventajas de la adaptación de la estrategia de delimitación del (macro) dominio como variable lingüística.O primeiro passo de uma pesquisa variacionista é a circunscrição da variável linguística que será o objeto de estudo. Em uma perspectiva sociofuncionalista, nossos objetivos são: (i) mostrar como a convergência do conceito de variável linguística com o de macrodomínio funcional pode ser empregada como estratégia para a circunscrição da variável; (ii) aplicar essa estratégia a dois domínios funcionais, adversidade e a concessividade. As variantes de codificação desses domínios são multifuncionais: mas e só que, no caso da adversidade, e mesmo (que), apesar (de) que e nem que, no caso da concessividade.
