Tem lá... variabilidade ou mudança a caminho? (Tem lá... variability or change on the way?)

Based on the assumption that the linguistic structure must be observed in its actual context of use, as endorsed by the sociofunctionalist approach, we present, in this article, a description and analysis of the use of tem lá (have there) from a synchronic sample extracted from informal comments published on the social network Twitter. We demonstrate that, in specific situations, the grammatical status of lá (there), adverb of place, changes in order to perform, combined with the verb ter (to have), a role focused on argumentative orientation. We argue that this change, motivated by factors of a pragmatic-discursive nature, corresponds to an instance of grammaticalization, a process of gradual regularization of the language.
