Resumo: Commensality is part of the subjects daily lives as a form of sociability, exchange, maintenance of cultural and religious practices, regardless of ethnic origins and since always. Thus, the aim of this study is to understand commensality in its nuances and its relevance at the Divino Espírito Santo Festival in Alcântara (Maranhão) and Criúva (Rio Grande do Sul) as a host present at the party. To do so, an ethnographic method was used to study the phenomenon of commensality that is evident at the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo, after visiting two parties in different states, Maranhão and Rio Grande do Sul, understanding the customs of these places and their respective parties , their beliefs and traditions passed on for generations to maintain a secular cultural practice. It was through the ethnographic method that intimacy with these customs in the two states, extremely antagonistic in cultural practices, that it was possible to get to know the similarities and peculiarities of the parties by intimately examining these particularities with the party-goers and components of the ritual of praising the Divino. Ethnography mediated some conclusions such as the perception of the fact that commensality is a constant at parties and bringing to light the two parties, because they are similar in the abundance of food, their diversity and in the way of receiving the visitor or the joker always with a food plate.
