Stigmas reinforced by the press: a study on women who have relationships with people deprived of liberty

The objective of this study is to discuss the representations of women who have relationships with people deprived of their liberty in three news items published between 2019 and 2020 in the websites A Tribuna, AC 24 Horas and Contilnet from Acre. In this work, we will present reflections on the concept of stigma and how it is linked to discussions about representations by journalism. The methodology is bibliographic research, document and content analysis. The bibliographic reference is supported by Stuart Hall, Michel Foucault, Erving Goffman, and others, as well as data and legislation on the population deprived of liberty and their relationships with their families are also presented. The considerations point to how the press has contributed to social stigmas continuing to be attached to women who have relationships with prisoners, understanding them as people who need to be socially excluded, as they carry with them the image of discredit and dishonesty.
