The aesthetic transformations that led to romanticism

Resumo: | At the end of 18th century a lot of social and economic changes led to a set of transformations in Western culture. Remarkable occurrences, such as Industrial Revolution and French Revolution created a social environment very different from the one Europe had lived so far. Literature, Performing Arts, Fine Arts had to seek for new ways of expression in order to portray the emerging social class of that historical moment: the Bourgeoisie. Hence Culture has undergone a lot of deep clashes which have generated new conceptions of Man, Beauty, Life starting a process of renovation in the arts that will go on throughout 19th and 20th centuries. The author, a specialist in intellectual history, tries to show in his essay which ideas were essential for the radical aesthetic change known by the name of Romanticism. |

No final do século XVIII mudanças sociais e econômicas ocasionaram uma série de transformações na cultura ocidental. Acontecimentos marcantes, tais como a Revolução Industrial e a Revolução Francesa, criaram um ambiente social muito diferente daquele vivido até então. Literatura, Teatro, Artes Plásticas tiveram que buscar novas formas de expressão para retratar a classe social que naquele momento histórico tornava-se hegemônica: a Burguesia. Por isso a Cultura sofre abalos profundos que geram uma nova concepção do Homem, do Belo, da Vida, iniciando um processo de renovação nas artes que irá se estender pelos séculos XIX e XX.
