Resumo: The free trade fairs are characterized by their method of retail trade and, as its name says, by its operation in the open air. They play a key role in contributing to the socio-economic development of the region in which they are located, as well as providing a better quality of food for consumers, since in general the products offered at the fair are very diverse, including the sale of fruit, vegetables, and meats among several others. Free trade fairs are an important commercialization area for the products of family agriculture, an area of socialization, regional and cultural identity, as well as political articulation.Considering the importance of issues related to free trade fairs, the objective was to study aspects of the free fair of the city of Delmiro Gouveia, in Alagoas, and to highlight the reality of the fairs, to present the trade relations that take place at fairs, to recover historical facts about the city, the fair and its formation and development. The social heterogeneity of marketers was observed in terms of gender, age, family income, marital status, some live in urban areas and others in rural areas, many of them were from other regions or even lived in other nearby cities. As a result, what was observed with the research is that the fair of the city of Delmiro Gouveia, Alagoas, is made up of 77% of the female fairgrounds, and 23% of the masculine gender, with an age range varying between 23 and 76 years old. Concerning the marital status of the marketers, it was observed that 73% were married, 17% were widowers and 10% of the interviewed marketers were single. As to the number of children per marketers, it was observed that most of them had more than 4 children. Regarding the educational level, it was found that 83% of the tradesmen interviewed had incomplete first degree, while 17% were illiterate. Concerning the participation of the marketers in social programs, it was observed that 40% of them were retired, 37% were included in the Bolsa Familia, while the 23% did not receive any aid from the government. Only 10% of the traders interviewed lived in settlements, and produced a part of the products they sold at the fair.In most cases, the goods offered at the Delmiro Gouveia fair were produced by some of the sellers themselves, who are family farmers, and / or from other regions, provided by middlemen. The poor infrastructure compromised the dynamics of the fair and the activities of the fair, reflecting the limited support of the public power to suchsocial equipment.
