Environmental sanitation problems assume considerable importance in the urban territory, since it is directly related to its health. The study’s objective was to perform a sanitary sewage system diagnosis in 5 (five) cities - about 31% population - of alagoano sertão: Delmiro Gouveia, Santana do Ipanema, Olho D’água do Casado, Cacimbinhas e Canapi, contextualizing it with the sector historical evolution at national level. The information was obtained from the municipal governments with their respective infrastructure department, as well as through the state sanitation company and the Development Company of the San Francisco Valley and Parnaíba (CODEVASF), and also on-site visits. According to the data obtained, even with the investments inside the average of the best brazilian local city in collection and treatment of sanitary sewage, the reality of the problems in the backwoods occurred in the preexisting infrastructure (when there were), projects failures like taken place in the local city of Canapi, Olho D’água do Casado e Santana do Ipanema, delays, additives, constructive errors and lagging in expropriations by the municipalities, producing of the works as in Delmiro Gouveia. Finally, it follows that the sector's problems are not limited to a financial resources strategy and that present serious problems of governance, express operational functions, directly reflect the inefficiency of the investments promoted by the Federal Government.
