Capoeira during the 19th and 20th centuries was a persecuted and criminalized cultural practice. Only in 2008 was it acknowledge as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), supported by Decree No. 3.551/00. In recent years there has been the expansion of capoeira around the world, resulting from internal refurbishments that contributed to this growth, thus demystifying prejudiced stereotypes. This article aims to analyze how the process of capoeira registration as a Brazilian intangible cultural heritage took place, in order to identify the mechanisms used that designed this title. We had as reference for this article the works of Oliveira and Leal (2009), Cid (2016), which helped us understand the social history of capoeira in Brazil; Orlandi's discourse analysis methodology (1999; 2001); Santos (2005) and Gomes (2013), who help us think about the creations and appropriations of the concept of Afro-Brazilian culture. As sources, we used documents (capoeira inventory, technical opinion, certificate of title) made available on the IPHAN digital platform, which helped in the study of the theme.
