Resumo: This research investigates the linguistic and educational situation of the deaf in the city of Pariconha-AL. It is a city far from the large centers, where the deaf consequently have less contact with the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and with deaf communities and their culture. Our theoretical framework is based on Gesser (2009), Guarinello (2007), Quadros (1997 and 2004), Santana (2007), Skliar (2010), Rosa (2011), Moura (2011). This is a qualitative research, with field research in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents and teachers of deaf students as a data collection instrument. As a result, we can perceive that the deaf communicate through gestures and lip reading, and that their teaching and learning does not contemplate Libras. We also noticed that teachers do not feel qualified for the education of deaf students. This work aims to contribute to studies on the education of the deaf, and the Brazilian sign language, as like any other language is indispensable in the life of the deaf.

Trata-se de uma cidade distante dos grandes centros, onde os surdos consequentemente têm menos contacto com a Língua Brasileira de Sinais (LIBRAS) e com as comunidades surdas e sua cultura. Nosso referencial teórico baseia-se em Gesser (2009), Guarinello (2007), Quadros (1997 e 2004), Santana (2007), Skliar (2010), Rosa (2011), Moura (2011). Trata-se de uma pesquisa do tipo qualitativa, com pesquisa de campo na qual foram utilizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas realizada com pais e professores dos alunos surdos como instrumento de coleta de dados. Como resultados, podemos perceber que os surdos se comunicam por meio de gestos e leitura labial, e que o ensino e aprendizagem dos mesmos não contempla a Libras. Percebemos também que os docentes não se sentem capacitados para a educação dos alunos surdos.
