The dynamics of population growth and human capacity to transform natural resources into inputs ended up constituting the problem of inadequate disposal of solid waste to the environment, contributing to the generation of environmental impacts, such as soil contamination. In this scenario, the environmentally adequate management of solid wast e has been gaining space in public institutions that wish to develop activities or services with environmental responsibility. Therefore, the general objective of this work aims to describe how the management of solid waste works in a public foundation in Parintins, AM, Brazil. The specific objectives are: (1) To identify the types of solid waste of the institution; (2) To classify, based on NBR 10. 004/2004, the waste identified as hazardous or nonhazardous; (3) Describe the stages of storage, collection, transportation and final disposal; (4) Verify if the stages of storage, collection and transportation enable an environmentally appropriate final disposal of waste, based on the main articles and sections of the main and complementary legislation; (5) Pro pose suggestions for environmental responsibility based on the guidelines for solid waste management suggested in the PNRS, so that there are responsibilities from storage, collection, transportation and final disposal. Methodologically, it is designed as action research, with a qualitative approach, applied nature, and descriptive research. The results found point out that, of the 5381 assets of the institution, approximately 300 have become solid waste over 16 years of service provision. From this conting ent, there are solid wastes classified as hazardous and nonhazardous, with potential for environmentally adequate destination and disposal, in addition to risks to public health and the environment. We conclude that this study provided the current panoram a of waste generation at the studied institution through the identification, registration, and classification as to the degree of hazardousness of the waste, so that it can offer suggestions for environmental responsibility practices throughout all stages of solid waste management at the institution in question.
