DYNAMICS OF LAND USE AND COVER AND THE EXPANSION OF SUGARCANE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF OURO VERDE (SP) AMONG THE YEARS OF 2004 AND 2018

Sugarcane is characterized as a crop that propped the dynamicity of uses in different Brazilian municipalities, especially those located in the  west portion of the São Paulo state. Considering that, this article aims to analyzes the dynamics of land use and land cover in the years of 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2018 from the expansion of sugarcane in the municipality of Ouro Verde (SP). In order to achieve the proposed objective, a data set was collected regarding sugarcane production based on the IBGE Agricultural Census (2017), as well as a space-time analysis of land use and land cover in the years 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2018 considering the availability of satellite images for the study area through the supervised classification MaxVer model. The expansion of sugarcane monoculture in Ouro Verde has increased the concentration of land, there has been a sharp decrease in the classes of temporary crops and pasture, in addition to fragmentation and subsequent homogenization of the landscape. It is understood that the expansion of sugarcane was responsible for the various social and environmental changes in the municipality of Ouro Verde from the 2000s onwards and that this crop guided all the dynamism of land use and land cover in the last 14 years.
