Rerum Novus Nascitur Ordo: a trajetória de Francisco Agostinho Gomes (1769-1842)

Francisco Agostinho Gomes atuou nos bastidores políticos, econômicos e intelectuais da Capitania e, posteriormente, Província da Bahia ao longo de sua vida. Porém, há poucos estudos sistemáticos e lacunas acerca de sua trajetória na historiografia. Pretende-se aqui vislumbrar a trajetória política e intelectual de Francisco Agostinho Gomes, inserindo-o no contexto de transformações políticas que agitaram a Bahia nas últimas décadas do século XVIII até a consolidação da Ordem Imperial brasileira.Objetiva-se também discutir as atividades literárias deste intelectual, suas publicações e experiência como jornalista à frente do “Jornal da Sociedade de Agricultura,Commercio e Industria da Provincia da Bahia” (1832-1836), bem como avaliar a sua fortuna e inserção econômica na Bahia. O referido personagem foi um dos ilustrados luso-brasílicos que atuaram no Império português, entre a segunda metade do século XVIII e primeira metade do século XIX, para fazer emergir uma nova ordem de coisas influenciadas pelo reformismo ilustrado português, alinhado aos seus interesses e com os da Coroa portuguesa. Esteve à frente de diversos empreendimentos com o objetivo de aprimorar a instrução pública, economia, comércio, agricultura, indústria e ciências na América portuguesa, tais como, entre outros, a Biblioteca Pública da Bahia e a Sociedade de Agricultura, Comércio e Indústria da Província da Bahia. Passados mais de um século e meio, sua vida e escritos permanecem pouco visibilizados. Sua obra política, jornalística e filosófica merece ser recuperada, antes que seja perdida em definitivo. O estudo de sua trajetória política e intelectual possibilita-nos uma nova perspectiva acerca da dinâmica social e econômica do Império português, sobretudo da Bahia, no referente período. Francisco Agostinho Gomes worked in the political, economic and intellectual backstage of the Capitania and, later, Province of Bahia throughout his life. However,there are few systematic studies and gaps about his trajectory in historiography. It is intended here to glimpse the political and intellectual trajectory of Francisco Agostinho Gomes, inserting it in the context of political transformations that agitated Bahia in the last decades of the XVIII century until the consolidation of the Brazilian Imperial Order. It is also intended to discuss the literary activities of this intellectual, his publications and experience as a journalist at the head of the "Jornal da Sociedade de Agricultura, commercio e Industria da Provincia da Bahia" (1832-1836), as well as evaluate his fortune and economic insertion in Bahia. The character was one of the PortugueseBrazilian illustrators who worked in the Portuguese Empire, between the second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, to emerge a new order of things influenced by Portuguese illustrated reformism, aligned with their interests and with those of the Portuguese Crown. He has been at the forefront of several projects aimed at improving public education, economics, commerce, agriculture, industry and science in Portuguese America, such as, among others, the Public Library of Bahia and the Society of Agriculture, Commerce and Industry of the Province from Bahia. After more than a century and a half, his life and writings remain scarcely visible. His political, journalistic and philosophical work deserves to be recovered, before it is finally lost. The study of its political and intellectual trajectory gives us a new perspective on the social and economic dynamics of the Portuguese Empire, especially of Bahia, in the reference period.
