Laser Application in Dental Specialties: a prospective study

Resumo: The laser has emerged as a disruptive invention in various industries, and it was no different in the medical field, extending to the dental specialties as well. In this paper, we mapped the technological advance of the laser, using patent applications as an indicator of innovation, and analyzed the current clinical uses of laser therapy in dentistry. A search of clinical trials in the PubMed database and a patent search on the Questel Orbit® platform over the last ten years were performed. The increasing number of patent applications highlights China (600 applications) as the most innovative country, followed by the USA (387) and South Korea (139). Meanwhile, American companies occupy four of the top five places, led by Align Technology (USA, 22 applications), a revolutionary orthodontics and digital dentistry company. Biostimulation, analgesia, decontamination, and blood coagulation are benefits of laser therapy in orthodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery, rendering lasers a major role in modern high-resolution dentistry.

Neste trabalho, mapeou-se o avanço tecnológico do laser, usando depósitos de patente como indicador de inovação, e foram analisados os usos clínicos atuais da laserterapia aplicada à odontologia. Foi realizada pesquisa de estudos clínicos na base de dados PubMed e busca patentária na plataforma Questel Orbit® nos últimos dez anos. O crescente avanço de depósitos patentários evidencia a China (600 depósitos) como país mais inovador, seguida pelos EUA (387) e Coreia do Sul (139). Todavia, as empresas americanas ocupam quatro das cinco primeiras colocações, sendo lideradas pela Align Technology (EUA, 22 depósitos), empresa revolucionária em ortodontia e odontologia digital.
