Bitcoin was the first application of blockchain technology, it is a virtual monetary system that does not require a central authority to issue currency, transfer ownership and confirm transactions. According to the literature, since the disclosure of the term blockchain in 2008, has increased the interest in this technology. However, studies on patent bases on blockchain are not easily found. This study aims to conduct a prospective analysis of patents on blockchain deposited in the global and national context until the beginning of July 2018. For this purpose, the Orbit Intelligence patent database system and the blockchain keyword were used in the "title", "abstract" and "claims" search fields. The survey resulted in 1035 patent families and, from the year 2015, the number of patent family deposits per year has increased exponentially. In Brazil, only 12 patents applications were filed, none of which were deposited primarily in the country
