Use of Coconut in Cosmetics Production: a Technological Prospect

The coconut culture originates from Southeast Asia and was implanted in Brazil in the 16th century, in the coastal region. The plant is used in various segments such as food, cosmetics and perfumery. The coconut crop has great socioeconomic importance, as it is generally exploited by small producers, mainly in the North and Northeast regions. The objective of the present work is to survey the patent deposits on the use of coconut as a raw material in the manufacture of cosmetics. The methodology used was a search in the Espacenet database using the terms coconut*, cosmetic* and skin* in the title and abstract, using the Boolean connector “and”, plus the codes A61K and A61Q. Data were collected in July 2022. The survey found that most patents do not come from the largest coconut producers, but from eastern countries such as Japan, China, and United State of America.
