Geographic Indication: cotton potential in West Bahia

Resumo: The Geographical Indication aims to differentiate the geographic origin of a product or service, from other similar ones, known for characteristics related to quality and reputation. Cotton started to be produced in the western region of Bahia since the mid-1990s, an activity consolidated until the present day. Thus, the objective of the article was to diagnose the potential and uniqueness of cotton produced in Western Bahia, with the purpose of identifying elements that can guide the structuring of a possible Geographical Indication. In this study, the Rapid Appraisal methodology, the guidelines of the Brazilian Standard NBR 16536, the Normative Instruction 95/2018 and the INPI Geographical Indications Manual were used. However, it was found that cotton from Western Bahia has fundamental elements that can guide the structuring of a possible Geographical Indication, such as history, production tradition, reputation, structured production chain and the producing region is geographically delimited.

O algodão passou a ser produzido na Região Oeste da Bahia desde meados da década de 1990, atividade consolidada até os dias atuais. Assim, o objetivo do artigo foi diagnosticar a potencialidade e a singularidade do algodão produzido no Oeste da Bahia, com o propósito de identificar elementos que possam orientar a estruturação de uma possível Indicação Geográfica. Neste estudo, foram utilizados a metodologia Rapid Appraisal, as diretrizes da Norma Brasileira NBR 16536, a Instrução Normativa n. 95/2018 e o Manual de Indicações Geográficas do INPI.
