TRANSFORMATION IN THE URBAN STRUCTURE AND SOCIAL INEQUALITIES: reflections from Salvador's trajectory

Resumo: Considering the changes that have taken place in Brazilian cities in recent decades, this article revisits the discussion on socio-spatial segregation and the “territory effect,” analyzing their impacts on the production and reproduction of social inequalities. Based on quantitative data and field research carried out on the city of Salvador, this article addresses the characteristics of its urbanization process, the existing segregation patterns, the available urban structure, and the inequalities, analyzed from the quality of the urban environment, access to educational services, employment opportunities, urban mobility, stigmatization, and violence. Abstracting some local specificities, the reality of Salvador does not fundamentally differ from what is seen in other large cities in the country, evidencing the articulation between the patterns of production, appropriation, and enjoyment of urban space and the reproduction of inequalities, since the social space, the stratification and the hierarchies are also translated into the territory.

Basée sur des données quantitatives et des recherches de terrain menées sur la ville de Salvador, l’article aborde les caractéristiques de son processus d’urbanisation, les schémas de ségrégation existants, la structure urbaine disponible et les inégalités, analysés dès la qualité de l’environnement urbain, l’accès aux services éducatifs, l’emploi, la mobilité urbaine, la stigmatisation et la violence. Abstraction faite de certaines spécificités locales, la réalité de Salvador ne diffère pas des éléments essentiels de ce qui est observé dans d’autres grandes villes du pays, mettant en évidence l’articulation entre les modes de production, d’appropriation et de jouissance de l’espace urbain et la reproduction des inégalités, puisque le espace social, la stratification et les hiérarchies se traduisent également dans le territoire.Levando em conta as transformações ocorridas nas cidades brasileiras nas últimas décadas, este artigo revisita a discussão sobre a segregação socioespacial e o “efeito território”, analisando seus impactos sobre a produção e reprodução das desigualdades sociais. Com base em dados quantitativos e pesquisas de campo realizadas sobre a cidade de Salvador, são abordadas as características do seu processo de urbanização, os padrões de segregação existentes, a estrutura urbana disponível e as desigualdades, analisadas a partir da qualidade do ambiente urbano, acesso a serviços educacionais, oportunidades de emprego, mobilidade urbana, estigmatização e violência.
