NOTES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RADICAL RIGHT IN ARGENTINA: the case of “La Libertad Avanza”

Resumo: For some years now, far-right parties and organisations in Latin America have achieved unexpected electoral successes. In Argentina, economist Javier Milei stands out as one of the most important candidates for the presidential elections to be held in October 2023. The aim of this paper isto offer a first approach to the growth of “La Libertad Avanza” (LLA), the personalist party organisation,defined as radical right-wing, led by Javier Milei. We propose: a) a historical analysis in order to contextualize and understand the scenario in whichLLA began to unfold; b) a characterization of JavierMilei and an analysis of his ideas; and c) a first approach on the way in which LLA is expanding in the Argentine geography, observing the deploymentof the party at the subnational level and taking as cases the provinces of Chubut, Tucumán and Santa Fe.

En Argentina se destaca la figura del economista Javier Milei que cuenta con una importante intención de voto para las elecciones presidenciales que se desarrollarán en octubre de 2023. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo ofrecer una primera aproximación sobre el crecimiento de “La Libertad Avanza” (LLA), la organización partidaria personalista, definida como de derecha radical liderada por Javier Milei. Proponemos: a) un análisis histórico para contextualizar y comprender el escenario en el que LLA se desarrolla; b) una caracterización de Javier Milei y un análisis de sus ideas; y c) un primer acercamiento sobre el modo en que LLA se está expandiendo en la geografía argentina, observando el despliegue del partido a nivel subnacional y tomando como casos las provincias de Chubut, Tucumán y Santa Fe.Depuis quelques années, les partis et organisations d’extrême droite en Amérique latine remportent des succès électoraux inattendus. En Argentine, la figure de l’économiste Javier Milei s’impose comme l’un des candidats les plus importants pour lesélections présidentielles d’octobre 2023. L’objectif de cet article est d’offrir une première approche de la croissance de “La Libertad Avanza” (LLA), l’organisation du parti personnaliste, défini comme étant de droite radicale, dirigé par Javier Milei.Nous proposons: a) une analyse historique pour contextualiser et comprendre le scénario dans lequelLLA se développe; b) une caractérisation de Javier Milei et une analyse de ses idées; et c) une première approche de la manière dont LLA se développe en Argentine, en observant le déploiement du parti auniveau sous-national et en prenant comme cas les provinces de Chubut, Tucumán et Santa Fe.Há alguns anos, partidos e organizações latino-americanas posicionadas ideologicamente à extrema-direita têm conseguido inesperados êxitos eleitorais. Na Argentina, destaca-se o economista Javier Milei, que tem elevadas intenções de voto para as eleições presidenciais que se realizarão em outubro de 2023. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo oferecer uma primeira aproximação sobre o crescimento de “La Libertad Avanza” (LLA), uma organização partidária personalista, definida como de direita radical e liderada por Javier Milei.
