Resumo: | This paper reconstitutes the experience of Belmira, an enslaved mother, in fighting for her own freedom and that of her children – Antero, Senhorinha and Manuel – in the Bahian city of Feira de Santana, between 1878 and 1879. To this end, we analyzed the case for freedom taken by her, [slave] registration records, [municipal] ordinances, letters exchanged , and a death certificate. Qualitative analysis of the archival traces of Belmira’s struggle herself and by those related to her reveals that, despite the intersectional oppression of class, gender and race, women such as Belmira were key characters in the fight for legal freedom. Comparison of the information obtained from the different types of documents showsthat the specificities of female slavery influenced their choice for this type of freedom. |
