In the last decades, lignin, the second most abundant biopolymer on the planet, has been gaining prominence in the context of renewable raw materials, since it exhibits potential for application in several areas due to its industrial scale availability and its physicochemical properties. However, currently most of the world's lignin production is burned for electricity generation. One of the possibilities for the revaluation of this material is its use as a precursor in polymers synthesis, such as for polyurethanes (PUs). The goal of this work is the synthesis and characterization of lignin-based thermoactivated PU adhesives. For this purpose, different amounts of unmodified and chemical modified (via two different hydroxypropylation routes) Kraft lignins were used as polyols in formulation containing diphenyl methylene diisocyanate (MDI) and castor oil. The synthesis methodology was based on the chemistry of blocked isocyanate and was divided into two steps: prepolymerization and curing. The blocking agent employed was the diisopropylamine (DIPA). Initially, the hydroxypropylation was confirmed by various techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR). After, the structure of the synthetized prepolymers was accessed via 2D NMR and the pre-polymerization and curing kinetics were investigated using temperature modulated optical refractometry (TMOR) and FTIR techniques. The results revealed that the presence of DIPA inhibited the densification of the systems and reduced the reaction rate during the pre-polymerization step, whereas the opposite effect was observed when the lignin amount was increased. The positive effect of hydroxypropylation was also verified. Lastly, the practical adhesion of the adhesives was evaluated on wood and steel substrates with the support of single-lap shear tests. All investigated formulations exhibited good adhesion on both substrates. Additionally, hydroxypropylation improved the mechanical properties of the adhesives. The results obtained from this study can scientifically support the development of lignin-based thermoactivated PU adhesives, thus contributing to the revaluation of this biopolymer.Santos, Demétrio Jackson dosPetzhold, Cesar LiberatoCarastan, Danilo JustinoSpinacé, Márcia Aparecida da SilvaVidotti, Suel EricAntonino, Leonardo Dalseno2022info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdf203 f. : il.http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=124651http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=124651&midiaext=80937Cover: http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/php/capa.php?obra=124651porreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFABCinstname:Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)instacron:UFABCinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2023-08-07T10:41:10Zoai:BDTD:124651Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://www.biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/oai/oai.phpopendoar:2023-08-07T10:41:10Repositório Institucional da UFABC - Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)false |
