In this work, corn starch, thermoplastic starch (TPS), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and viscose fiber waste (FV) were characterized and biocomposites of TPS/FV and nanobiocomposites of TPS reinforced with FV and TiO2 (TPS/FV/TiO2) were prepared. TiO2 was added as a reinforcement and antimicrobial agent. TPS and TPS/FV films with 10 to 40% by weight (% m) of FV were prepared by mechanical stirring (80 ºC) and processed by compression molding (MC) and extrusion-compression molding (EX) aiming to compare the influence of the processes on the properties of the biocomposites. TPS, FV and biocomposites of TPS/FV were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetry (TGA), moisture content, and tensile test. TiO2 and nanobiocomposites of TPS/FV/TiO2 were characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA, antimicrobial activity, atomic force microscopy and tensile tests. FV showed smooth surface and is composed by a mixture of cellulose I and II. TiO2 nanoparticles presented a rutile type structure. The results of the tensile tests showed that biocomposite of TPS/FV with 40% m of FV from EX process presented the greatest increase in tensile strength (336%) compared to TPS-EX, indicating the EX process as the most appropriate. The increases in mechanical properties indicate that the incorporation of FV in TPS resulted in a strong interaction between the matrix and the fibers. TiO2 nanoparticles with 3 to 5% m were incorporated in the biocomposite with 40% m of FV from EX process. The nanobiocomposite (TPS/FV40/TiO2) with 5% m of TiO2 showed an increase of about 479% in the tensile strength compared to TPS-EX. The results of the antimicrobial activity showed that although TiO2 nanoparticles act as a reinforcement in the nanobiocomposites of TPS/FV/TiO2, they did not inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Comparing the mechanical results of TPS with biocomposites of TPS/FV and nanobiocomposites of TPS/FV/TiO2, it was found that these materials present potential application in engineering area.Spinacé, Márcia Aparecida da SilvaCarastan, Danilo JustinoBonvent, Jean JacquesSouza, Renan Ferreira Menegassi de2020info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdf100 f. : il.http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=123717http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=123717&midiaext=80614http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=123717&midiaext=80615Cover: http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/php/capa.php?obra=123717porreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFABCinstname:Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)instacron:UFABCinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2023-01-18T11:20:47Zoai:BDTD:123717Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://www.biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/oai/oai.phpopendoar:2023-01-18T11:20:47Repositório Institucional da UFABC - Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)false |
