Better knowledge of geographic distribution patterns of their species in the oceans would provide potential support for a number of other studies about the group, such as ecological, environmental, biogeographical, faunistic and physiological. In this context, the objective of this study was to compile and provide the patterns of the Physonectae (one of the three suborders of Siphonophorae) global geographic distribution from a broad review of the data available in the bibliography and relate them to a proposal for regionalization of surface oceanic waters. The distribution data of the species were compiled from the scientific literature and synthesized in a table. After filtering too generalized data, specific maps were elaborated for each family, besides maps encompassing the distribution of the whole group, its abundance of records and species richness. Then, a table was created relating the distribution data of the different species and families to a zoning scheme of the oceanic waters. Finally, grouping and ordering analyzes were performed to test the data set analyzed in relation to the regionalization scheme of oceanic surface waters. The general Physonectae distribution patterns are related to the sampling effect and abiotic variables such as temperature, bathymetry and primary productivity. In the context of the specific distribution patterns of species and families, these were related to their biological specificities, sea currents and regionalization of oceanic waters. However, in general, the Physonectae geographical distribution patterns did not corroborate the current scheme of oceanic surface waters regionalization, based on the results obtained. The results presented here allow a better understanding of the group's distribution, which are the basis for studies with a variety of approaches to Physonectae.Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Evolução e Diversidade, São Bernardo do Campo, 2019.Apesar de abundantes e ecologicamente importantes na cadeia trófica do pelagial marinho, os Siphonophorae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) ainda são um grupo relativamente pouco estudado. Um maior conhecimento sobre os padrões de distribuição geográfica de suas espécies nos oceanos traria um potencial suporte para uma série de outros estudos acerca do grupo, tais como ecológicos, ambientais, biogeográficos, faunísticos e fisiológicos. Nesse contexto, este estudo teve como objetivo compilar e disponibilizar os padrões da distribuição geográfica global dos Physonectae (uma das três subordens de Siphonophorae) a partir de uma ampla revisão dos dados disponíveis na bibliografia e relacioná-los a uma proposta de regionalização das águas superficiais oceânicas. Os dados de distribuição das espécies foram compilados da literatura científica e sintetizados em uma tabela. Após filtragem de dados demasiadamente generalizados, foram elaborados mapas específicos para cada família, além de mapas englobando a distribuição de todo o grupo, sua abundância de registros e riqueza de espécies. Em seguida, foi criada uma tabela que relaciona os dados de distribuição das diferentes espécies e famílias, que foram relacionados com um esquema de zoneamento das águas oceânicas. Por fim, foram realizadas análises de agrupamento e ordenação para testar o conjunto de dados analisado em relação ao esquema de regionalização das águas superficiais oceânicas. Os padrões gerais de distribuição geográfica de Physonectae estão relacionados ao efeito de amostragem e a variáveis abióticas, como temperatura, batimetria e produtividade primária. Em relação aos padrões específicos de distribuição das espécies e famílias, os mesmos foram relacionados às especificidades biológicas das famílias e espécies, correntes marítimas e regionalização das águas oceânicas. Entretanto, de forma geral, os padrões de distribuição geográfica dos Physonectae não corroboraram com o esquema vigente de regionalização das águas superficiais oceânicas, a partir dos resultados obtidos.
