Causality is the term with which one refers to the relationship between a "causative? event and a consequence that this causer seems to be inducing. The sensation of causality is a subjective abstraction, drawn from the co-occurrence of two or more perceptual events. According to Hume (1738), the impression of causality seems to depend on three fundamental elements: contiguity, succession, and contingency. The main goal of this thesis was to investigate the cognitive factors and processes that influence learning and perception of causality in humans. For this, four experiments were performed and presented. In the first experiment it was investigated how the causal learning process evolves during a sequence of events in a discrete time scenario. The results indicated that participants accumulate and update their causal judgments based on the evidence of the spontaneous rate of events throughout a sequence of trials. In the following experiments, it was presented a new experimental paradigm with continuous time and space, based on spatio-temporal Poisson fields, not yet described in the experimental literature reviewed. Here this new experimental paradigma is informally called Discworld. In the Discworld I experiment it was investigated causal inference based on temporal and spatial intervals between action and consequence. The results showed that the lower the time interval and the spatial interval the greater the perception of causality. In the Discworld II experiment experimental trials were blocked according to the spontaneous event rate values. The goal was to investigate whether the event rate modulates the volunteers' causal judgment. The results indicated that volunteers learn the value of the event rate and use it in their judgments. In the Discworld III experiment it was investigated whether causal learning can also occur in a context of continuous time and space stimulus. The results showed that as participants repeat the sequence of trials of a block they learn whether they are in a causal or non-causal configuration. In general, the results of this thesis show that event rate, distance and time interval are factors that influence the perception and learning of causality. Fundamentals of ideal observer models, based on the principles of Bayesian inference, have also been developed for the experimental tasks presented in this thesis. These results contribute to the advance of the studies on causality, in particular, and consequently in Cognitive Sciences as a whole.2018info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdf129 f.http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=119928http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=119928&midiaext=77906http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=119928&midiaext=77905Nóbrega, Manasses PereiraClaessens, Peter Maurice ErnaCravo, André MascioliPavão, RodrigoReyes, Marcelo BussottiRohenkohl, Gustavoporreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFABCinstname:Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)instacron:UFABCinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2022-03-24T16:15:02Zoai:BDTD:119928Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://www.biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/oai/oai.phpopendoar:2022-03-24T16:15:02Repositório Institucional da UFABC - Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)false |
