Active search as strategy to contain dropouts in higher education

Resumo: This article aims to present the potential of active search as a strategy to contain dropout in higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Having the perception of low student adherence to the Remote Emergency Education academic cycles (ERE), the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) in Palotina established in March 2021 the Commission for Studies and Strategies for Containing Evasion during Pandemic Times. Among the strategies adopted to support the work of the Working Groups created within the scope of this commission, an active search for undergraduate students who did not enroll after the resuming the 2020 academic calendar was conducted. Thus, through a qualitative approach and through the use of a participatory research method, it was possible to identify the reasons why students did not reapply their enrollment to the university, and try to rescue those who lost their connection with the campus due to social distancing, but who have not made the decision to leave the course permanently. The results of active search as a strategy to contain dropout in higher education evidenced the importance of strengthening direct institutional contact with students to reduce dropout rates. The proposed actions can be adapted and improved for application in other university contexts.

Con la percepción de la baja adhesión de los estudiantes a los ciclos académicos de Educación Remota de Emergencia (ERE), el Setor Palotina de la Universidad Federal de Paraná (UFPR) estableció en marzo de 2021 la Comisión de Estudios y Estrategias para Contener la Deserción en el Período Pandémico. Entre las estrategias adoptadas para apoyar el trabajo de los Grupos de Trabajo creados en el ámbito de esta comisión, se llevó a cabo la búsqueda activa de estudiantes de grado que no se matricularon luego de retomar el calendario académico 2020. A partir del uso del método de investigación participante, fue posible identificar las razones mediante las cuales los estudiantes no renovaron su vínculo con la universidad y tratar de rescatar a quienes perdieron la conexión con el campus por la distancia social, pero que no habían tomado la decisión de abandonar finalmente el curso. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron la importancia de fortalecer el contacto institucional directo con los estudiantes para reducir las tasas de deserción. Las acciones propuestas se pueden adaptar y mejorar para su aplicación en otros contextos universitarios.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar o potencial da busca ativa como estratégia de contenção da evasão no ensino superior durante a pandemia de Covid-19. Com a percepção da baixa adesão de estudantes aos ciclos acadêmicos do Ensino Remoto Emergencial (ERE), o Setor Palotina da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR) instituiu em março de 2021 a Comissão de Estudos e Estratégias de Contenção da Evasão no Período Pandêmico. Entre as estratégias adotadas para subsidiar a atuação dos Grupos de Trabalho criados no âmbito dessa comissão foi realizada a busca ativa dos estudantes dos cursos de graduação que não se matricularam após a retomada do calendário acadêmico de 2020. Dessa forma, por meio de uma abordagem qualitativa e emprego do método de pesquisa participante, foi possível identificar os motivos pelos quais os estudantes não renovaram seu vínculo com a universidade e tentar resgatar aqueles que perderam a conexão com o campus em função do distanciamento social, mas que não haviam tomado a decisão de abandonar o curso em definitivo. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a importância do fortalecimento do contato institucional direto com os estudantes para a redução dos índices de evasão.
