The mass media and its importance in forging consciences of what it is to be “criminal” in a racist, sexist and economically elitist society

This study consisted of a research that involved bibliographic and documentary analyzes with a view to understanding the role of the mass media in forging consciences of what it is to be "criminal" in a racist, sexist and economically elitist society. For this, we start from the premise that we live in a society whose mode of production was built and structured on the pillars of machismo and racism. Among the sophisticated ways in which racism and machismo advance, we highlight here the way in which the discourses used by mass media vehicles create the image of the criminal. From the analysis of decolonial, Afrocentric references, emerging from black feminism, as well as journalistic articles and official documents about hyper-incarceration, violence perpetrated by the armed hand of the State, and police torture, it was found that the discourse on / the criminal is a deceit that is only at the service of the interests of those in power and who enjoy the privileges of the prevailing gender, race and class norm.
