Resumo: This article presents the conception of existence of Ortega y Gasset. He admits that a person’s way of living can be properly understood only in the historical horizon in which he or she is embedded. In addition to this, it will show that Ortega y Gasset, in his book Meditación de la técnica, associated the authenticity of human existence with the capability of individuals of being lost in themselves and making choices without being primarily motivated by the circumstances that affect them. It is presumed here that to understand this is essential to grasp the idea proposed by Ortega y Gasset that, subsumed to collectivity, humans beings are not authentic.

No autor, é possível perceber uma efetiva contribuição à concepção de existência. Para ele, o homem, ao passar a existir, partilha de uma determinada forma de viver e de pensar num dado momento histórico. Em seu livro Meditación de la técnica, Ortega apresenta a vida humana como radical a cada um e construída por pura escolha. Ao decidir viver, o homem vai adaptando a realidade a si, construindo pela imaginação realidades distintas das que estão postas. Isso somente é possível porque ele pode por alguns instantes ensimesmar-se, ou seja, manter contato direto com sua interioridade. Contudo, o homem está envolvido pelas suas circunstâncias as quais lhe afetam constantemente.
