SOCIAL CAPITAL AND PARTICIPATORY ACTION: THE PUBLIC GOOD AND THE CONTEMPORARY SENSE OF PHILANTHROPY

Resumo: Modem democracy established public and private spheres as two distinct camps and guaranteed their linkage to the sense of a public common good. This did not only occur by the functional mechanisms of democracy, but mostly, by values and social norms and conjugated the two spheres with innumerous and differentiated types of social ties. The recent democratization of Brazil revealed that the sense of the common good, that located its most relevant fundamentals in inherited social capital, lead to more social connectedness as an outcome of more intense social participation. By influencing individual and group actions in relation to ample democratic development in terms of social opportunities and multiple policies, social capital became determinant in comprehending how individuals formulated a sense of public common good and its transformation into participatory act.

Este se configura não somente pelos mecanismos funcionais da democracia, mas, antes de tudo, pelos valores e normas sociais que conjugam as duas esferas por meio de inúmeros e diferenciados tipos de laços sociais. A recente democratização do Brasil evidencia que o senso de bem público, que encontra seus fundamentos mais relevantes no capital social herdado, propicia mais laços sociais quanto mais intensas forem as formas de participação social.
