Resumo: This article is a contribution to the reading of Machiavelli as a political analyst. It highlights some of the ideas which are crucial to his interpretation of reality and suggests ways to circumvent some of the multiple crossroads contained in the author’s writings. Machiavelli’s political findings, especially in The Prince and the Discorsi, although written in the XVI century, have a reach that goes well beyond the barriers of time and geography. His political analysis, centered on the difference between private and public spaces and appearance and essence, are important paradigms for a realist approach of politics.

Os achados políticos de Maquiavel, especialmente em O Príncipe e nos Discursos sobre a Segunda Década de Tito Lívio, embora datem do século XVI, ultrapassam barreiras impostas pelo tempo e pela geografia.
