Duel between “Vassal” Candidates: the election campaign for the city of Fortaleza’s Major in 2012

In this text we analyze the dispute between the leadership of the Mayor and the Governor, that in the search for impose their hegemony in the Ceará's political field, they transformed the campaign for Mayor of Fortaleza in a clash not between the own candidates, but between the images of their candidatures patrons'. The candidates Elmano Freitas (Mayor's candidate), and Roberto Cláudio (Governor's candidate) who were in the second-round, were fitted in the category of "poles" , term coined by the Press and utilized by the political analysts to refer to a phenomenon that has become frequent in Brazilian politics: the indication, by the already established political leaders, of unknown candidates to the general electorate, but considered custodian of personal trust for the dispute of the posts in the executive branch and that work as a sort of test of the prestige and political capital of their patrons.
