Resumo: This article presents an analysis of a series of questions regarding the phenomenon of philanthropic volunteering and the intersections between this and the constitution of new patterns of State action. The study was undertaken with great methodological care, electing as units of analysis the institutional field of charity and the ideals of social solidarity referenced by State social programs. Consequently, it centers around the debate regarding the meanings ascribed to poverty and the poor as beneficiaries of social philanthropic action (both public and private).

Destaca os cuidados metodológicos inerentes aos procedimentos analíticos, elegendo como unidades de análise o campo institucional da caridade e o ideário da sociedade solidária, referenciador de programas sociais estatais.
