Resumo: In Maquiavelli there exists an irreconcilable opposition between the desires of the powerful to rule and the people to avoid oppression. Having as reference the dialects of  desire put forward by Claude Lefort’ readings of Maquiavelli’s Discorsi, the article argues that the dream of  enlightenment about a society without conflict would mean  for Machiavelli the end of freedom and disputes among  social forces in political society
