Resumo: Although Brazilian income inequality is still ranked among the highest in the world, its reduction has been a drawing point after Plano Real. Given the importance of the labor market in explaining this reduction, this research has the objective to show its main determinants. The methodology used in this research is applied to Northeastern Brazil using the data from the national survey PNAD in the years 1995-2005 and 2001-2005. This decomposition shows that education is still the main important determinant of the labor income inequality.

Dada a importância de modificações ocorridas no mercado de trabalho para explicar esta queda, esta dissertação tem o objetivo de mostrar quais são os seus principais determinantes. A metodologia descrita neste trabalho é aplicada ao Nordeste do Brasil usando os dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostragem Domiciliar (PNAD) para os períodos de 1995-2005 e 2001- 2005.
