Resumo: This study aimed to learn about the process of communication between the health team and the mothers of newborns under phototherapy in the light of the Humanistic Theory’s presuppositions. It is characterized as a descriptive, qualitative study guided by the Phenomenological Nursing Process implemented with 25 mothers of newborns under phototherapy, in Fortaleza-CE. The data were collected from January to March 2005, with participant observation and interview in two different moments before and after the implementation of an educational program. Out of the speeches extracted from the fi rst phase, it was possible to identify the theme: communication and the subthemes: damaged communication with the health team; lack of communication of the health team and, in the second phase, the subtheme: reactions of the mother after effective communication with the nurse. It was concluded that the effective communication of the nurse contributed for the well-being of the mothers whose child was under phototherapy.

Caracteriza-se como um estudo descritivo, qualitativo norteado pelo Processo da Enfermagem Fenomenológica, implementado com 25 mães de neonatos sob fototerapia, em Fortaleza-CE. Coletaram-se os dados de janeiro a março de 2005, mediante observação participante e entrevista em dois momentos distintos antes e após a implementação de um programa educativo. Das falas extraídas na primeira fase, identifi cou-se o tema: comunicação, e os subtemas: comunicação prejudicada com a equipe de saúde, ausência de comunicação da equipe de saúde e, na segunda fase, o sub-tema: reações da mãe após comunicação efetiva da enfermeira. Concluiu-se que a comunicação efetiva da enfermeira contribuiu para o estar – melhor das mães com o fi lho sob fototerapia.El objetivo de este estudio consistió en conocer el proceso de comunicación entre el equipo de salud y las madres de los neonatos bajo fototerapia desde el punto vista de la Teoría Humanística. Se caracteriza como un estudio descriptivo, cualitativo orientado por el Proceso de Enfermería Fenomenológica, efectuado con 25 madres de neonatos bajo fototerapia, en Fortaleza – CE. Se recogieron los datos de enero a marzo de 2005, mediante observación partícipe y entrevista en dos momentos distintos, antes y después de la ejecución de un programa educativo. De las conversaciones entresacadas en la primera fase, se identifi có el tema: comunicación, y los subtemas: comunicación perjudicada con el equipo de salud, ausencia de comunicación por parte del equipo de salud y, en la segunda fase, el subtema: reacciones de la madre después de la comunicación efectiva de la enfermera.
