This paper presents the importance of a decision support system for a health insurance company, with a focus in the medical bills area, in order that this area needs a significant amount of information to support decision making. For the theoretical foundation an extensive literature research was done on information systems and business strategy, conceptualizing and presenting system, data, information and knowledge, business strategy, information technology and decision support systems. It appears also, throughout the paper, models of information systems used in companies in the health insurance business, with a brief history of the industry in Brazil, the profile of the sector and the information systems used in companies in the industry. In the case was observed a great dependence of the area of medical bills in the information systems to meet the deadlines and rules for payment, given the huge volume of processed tabs. The system used in the health insurance company, the object of this study, subsidizes the decision making process at all levels in the area of medical bills and presents the information in a logical and objective way. That area accounts for the highest disbursement of the organization. Through the analysis of the results, it was evident that the system provides relevant information that significantly influence the control of the operations costs and payment of accredited.
