Resumo: A growing number of elderly women sexually active, requiring the attention of health professionals to exercise their sexuality in a healthy way. Aimed at learning about the habits for the prevention of cervical cancer in elderly institutionalized in Fortaleza. Study a quantitative approach, with a descriptive and cross-section. Held in a nursing home, with 46 and 26 elderly. Data collection was by an instrument of objective questions in the month of April 2008. Found low education, a minority were married, 21.7% had never performed the Pap smear, 63.9% contained no regularity in the examinations and none had cancer. Some factors hinder the implementation of strategies for Health Education: low educational level, the proximity of death. But we have to invest in activities that encourage this population in the areas of their lives.

But we have to invest in activities that encourage this population in the areas of their lives.É crescente o número de idosas com vida sexual ativa, necessitando de atenção dos profissionais de saúde para exercerem sua sexualidade de forma saudável. Objetivou-se conhecer os hábitos relativos à prevenção do câncer de colo uterino de idosas institucionalizadas em Fortaleza-CE. Estudo do tipo quantitativo, com abordagem descritiva e delineamento transversal. Realizado em uma instituição asilar, com 46 idosas. A obtenção dos dados foi através de um instrumento de questões objetivas no mês de abril de 2008. Encontramos baixa escolaridade, a minoria era casada, 21,7% nunca tinham realizado o exame de Papanicolaou, 63,9% não estabeleciam regularidade na realização dos exames e nenhuma possuía neoplasias. Alguns fatores dificultam a realização de estratégias de Educação em Saúde: baixo nível de escolaridade, a proximidade da morte. Mas, temos que investir em atividades que estimulem esta população nos âmbitos de suas vidas.Un número creciente de mujeres de edad sexualmente activa, que requieren la atención de los profesionales de la salud a ejercer su sexualidad de manera saludable. Tuvo como objetivo conocer los hábitos para la prevención del cáncer cervical en ancianos institucionalizados en Fortaleza. Estudio de un enfoque cuantitativo, con una parte descriptiva y transversal. Lugar: en un hogar de ancianos, con 46 y 26 ancianos. Recolección de datos fue mediante un instrumento de preguntas objetivas en el mes de abril de 2008. Encontrados bajo nivel educativo, una minoría se casaron, el 21,7% nunca había realizado la prueba de Papanicolaou, el 63,9% no contenía ninguna regularidad en los exámenes y no tenía cáncer. Algunos factores que difi cultan la aplicación de estrategias de educación para la salud: bajo nivel educativo, la proximidad de la muerte.
